Nutella Gelato

Last week I bought my very first ice cream maker and already I have a serious ice cream making addiction. Every single day I feel like I need to make ice cream or the world is going to end. I browse Bell Blue and Ben and Jerry’s sites searching for inspiration, walk down the ice cream aisle and dream of crazy concoctions. I can’t even begin to tell you how many insane ideas I have running through my sugar filled head. But I felt I needed to stay true to the love of my life and make Nutella Gelato. In case you’ve been living under a rock or are a new reader (hello! new reader! :) ) I absolutely adore Nutella and drool over any recipe using this glorious chocolate hazelnut spread.

Making ice cream is so incredibly simple and I highly recommend buying an ice cream maker. I bought mine on sale at Sur La Table. They have the discontinued colors (aka not the summer colors) on sale. Mine is blue, one of my favorite colors so I love it. :) The new colors are also on sale but about $13 more. (that’s not including tax, we don’t pay sales tax in Oregon) But the news colors are so bright, lovely and I have an affinity for bright colors.

Pour 2 cups of whole milk and 1 cup of heavy whipping cream into a medium saucepan. Add in 1/2 cup of sugar.

Heat over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, around 5 minutes.

While it’s heating up, put 4 egg yolks in a large bowl with the whisk attachment. Add in 1/4 cup of sugar. Beat for about 4 minutes until the egg yolks are thick and pale yellow.

Pour in 1/2 cup of the warm heavy whipping cream/milk. Continue mixing.

Pour the mixture into the saucepan.

Heat over medium low heat for 10 minutes. Continue mixing with a spatula or whisk. I alternate between the two. If you want, you can cook it over low heat like Giada says but I say…eh medium low.

Put a fine mesh sieve over a large bowl and pour the mixture through the sieve. This will help eliminate any lumps.

Then add in 1/2 cup of Nutella (!!!) and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Whisk it up!

Let the mixture cool in the refrigerator overnight.

The next day, assemble your ice cream maker. Turn it on, pour in the cooled nutella gelato liquid. (or freeze it according to your manufacturer’s instructions)

I find this part the most fascinating, watching the liquid turn into gelato. I’m nerdy like that. ;)

Once it’s done, put into an airtight container and freeze your gelato.

Then when the gelato is ready, chop up some Baci candy (chocolate hazelnut candy) and sprinkle it on top of the Nutella gelato. Enjoy!

Nutella Gelato
(Giada De Laurentiis)

2 cup whole milk
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup sugar
4 egg yolks
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup Nutella
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Baci for topping

In a large saucepan, combine the whole milk, heavy whipping cream and 1/2 cup of sugar. Heat over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved, about 5 minutes.

In a large mixing bowl with the whisk attachmen, whip the egg yolks with 1/4 cup of sugar for about 4 minutes until it’s thick and pale yellow.

Take 1/2 cup of the heavy whipping cream/milk mixture and slowly pour it into the mixing bowl. Whisk it together. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan.

Heat over medium low for about 10 minutes until the mixture is thick.

Then remove it from the heat and strain it through a fine mesh sieve into a large bowl.

Add in the Nutella and vanilla extract and whisk it in.

Cover the Nutella gelato mixture with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator to chill overnight.
Once it’s done chilling, freeze the ice cream according to your manufacturer’s instructions.

Cut up some Baci and sprinkle on top. Enjoy!

  10. That looks amazing! I must say when I was pregnant, hazelnut gelato was a must have in our house. I never did fully quelch that craving, because we moved away from our old gelato shop. Hagen daz is good…but doesn’t cut it when you’re craving the real deal. This looks divine. I must try it.

  11. Liz says:

The only gelato I’ve ever made was nothing like the creamy delights we ate in Italy. I’ll definitely try your recipe, Lindsey :)

  17. I’m definitely making this! Looks so yummy and I love Nutella!! I have a Cuisinart Soft Serve Ice Cream Machine and for anyone who’s looking to buy an ice cream maker, I highly recommend this… it’s pretty hard to beat soft serve ice cream in less than 20 minutes. Yay!

  18. That looks so good. I’m addicted to nutella and just ran out yesterday. Needless to say all during my half marathon today-I was thinking when the heck I would have time to buy more nutella. ha

  19. Parsley Sage says:

  20. Looks so good…which reminds me that it’s almost time to get my Cuisinart ice cream maker from under the cabinets and get ready to use it since it’s nearly summertime for us again!! Love Blue Bell…my best friend lives not far from the “little creamery in Brenham,” so we’re planning a tour in a few weeks!!

  21. Vicki says:

I love the sounds of this gelato! I’m also pretty jealous of your blue ice cream maker. Mine is boring white, zzzz…

  22. Christina says:

Oh my God, that is insane!! I really, really want to buy an ice cream maker. And a waffle maker. I don’t have either! If I show this recipe to my husband do you think he’d let me get one… :)

  23. Judy says:

I’ve got the nutella now after trying it in Europe, but haven’t done much with it. I think it’s about to be turned into gelato!

  24. Natasha says:

Yum! I need to get me an ice cream maker!

  25. Pachecopatty says:

Girl you are dangerous with that Nutella and your stand mixer, now an ice cream mixer gets thrown in to the mix, oh no watch out;-)

  26. Karen says:

I can completely understand the addiction….last summer I made fruit sorbets every other day! I haven’t tried making gelato yet, and Nutella has got to be the best option. I always get choc-hazelnut when ordering. This looks fantastic!

  27. Sandra says:

My ice cream maker is in the freezer patiently waiting for me to call it into duty. This one goes into the save pile.

  28. This looks amazing! I def need to get an ice cream maker. Yum!

All I can say is amazing :) I need an ice cream maker ASAP :D

  35. I’m quite familiar with that ice cream making obsession, when I first got mine I made a new batch almost every day it seemed! There’s just no comparison to the store bought kind.

  36. Hats says:

So THIS is what you were working on! I can’t eat regular Nutella and annoyingly passed up the chance to buy a vegan version at the weekend. I did, however, by a jar of PB&Co Dark Chocolate Dreams (I really want to move to London soon – great for my mouth, bad for my waistline). When I get an ice cream maker, I am definitely making peanut and chocolate ice cream…

  37. I am so jealous of your ice cream maker! This gelato looks amazing!

  38. Nina says:

Ok, you have officially inspired me to get an ice-cream machine. This gelato looks so amazingly delicious..I can only imagine how good it tastes!!!

  42. Yay for making it into the ice cream maker club! ;)
Now that your in, you WON’T be able to stop coming up with new flavors. It’s become a bit of a problem in our house.

    This looks utterly delightful!

  43. Jan says:

I kind of stole my mom’s ice cream maker last summer, and I agree that ice cream makers are fantastic, and watching the custard become ice cream is awesome! Quick question, what’s the difference between gelato and ice cream? I honestly have no clue. I ate gelato once, years ago in Rome, and I remember loving it, but can’t remember if it tasted/felt different to me.

  44. Dana says:

You had me @ Nutella. I would put it on everything!!!

  45. Brandie says:

Haha – isn’t is so funny how much ice cream you make when you first get an ice cream maker. It becomes an obsession..LOL. Really like this combination of flavors too!

  46. Sanjeeta kk says:

A real treat for all Nutella fan! Love the gorgeous Gelato.

  47. Angela says:

Frozen Nutella – What can be better than that!! Oh yea, a spoon! Thanks for posting this – Yet another excuse to break out the ol’ ice-cream maker!

  48. CookiePie says:

    WOW – nutella + gelato = YUMMY!!

  49. That looks incredibly yummy. I really want to make it…only one problem, I’d have to eat it all. My BF watches every calorie that enters his mouth. Hmmmm, eat it all myself—where’s the problem? YIPEEEEEE!!! MINE MINE MINE!!!!

  50. BigFatBaker says:

I love your nutella addiction. Every time I come and check out a post I find myself craving some too…
I have been wanting to buy an ice cream maker for a long time but haven’t had a good enough reason yet. As soon as I get around to it I want to try this recipe. Nothing beats gelato, and I’m sure the nutella adds another layer of flavor that I can’t even begin to imagine.

  51. briarrose says:

I want this….I want it so much right now. ;) Fabulous flavor!

  52. Maria says:

    My favorite!

  53. Yum, it must taste so good. One of these recipes that make me want an ice cream maker…

My goodness this sounds amazing! As a new nutella addict I will be making this this summer for sure!!

  56. Love this, especially the chocolate covered nut garnish! Yum!

  57. OMG I’m so going to make this…maybe even tonight! I haven’t used my ice cream maker since last summer, and I think it’s high time to dust it off and get to churning out ice creams and sorbets again. And with Nutella – what could be better!? Thanks to Giada and to YOU!

  58. Claudie says:

Your gelato is one of the most delicious-looking ice creams I’ve seen in a long time. You are definitely giving me a good reason to forget that the San Fran weather has yet again postponed the Spring-Summery time… I’ll be making this soon ;)

  59. I wish I had an ice cream maker that worked. I was sent one to review and it was horrible.

  60. Becky says:

Your gelato looks so good, especially with the nut topping. We have an ice cream maker that’s so dangerous. We keep it in the basement! But we may may to bring it upstairs to make this gelato. Nutella is the best.

  61. Reeni says:

I have a new ice cream maker too! And share your love of nutella! This is a must make for me – delectable!

  62. Joy says:

    Hmmm Nutella. That looks wonderful.

  63. This sensational gelato is downright irresistible, Lindsey. I can’t wait to try this at my NC dairy farm home this summer, where I’ll have the raw milk and fresh cream (and my IC maker there) to do this fab recipe justice.

  64. OMG! nutella and gelato in the same sentence! I seriuosly need to get an icecream maker!

  65. For homemade ice cream this looks amazing! I’m so hungry right now…just drooling over the photos. :)

  66. Just discovered your blog and I’m definitely coming back for more! This recipe looks incredible and the perfect use of nutella as summer comes around the corner. I love the idea of crumbling Baci over the top too. Thanks for such an awesome recipe and keep up the good work :-)

  67. michele says:

i just made it! its in the fridge chilling now and tomorrow a.m. (maybe even late tonight) i will be eating it!!

  68. megan says:

I know I’ll be making this recipe! Cant wait!!!
